Legislation would improve efficiency: save money
Madison - Rep. Gary Sherman (D-Port Wing) announced that his legislation, AB77, that alters the manner in which the school levy and lottery property tax credits are distributed to municipalities, today passed the Joint Finance Committee by a vote of 16-0. The legislation previously passed the Ways and Means Committee by a vote of 13-0.
Under current law, the Department of Revenue sends credit payments to over 1,800 local treasurers in the state. Those treasurers must then make the distributions to the counties and numerous other taxing jurisdictions.
Under this bill, the funds are distributed directly to the 72 county treasurers. They then settle with the various taxing jurisdictions as part of the overall property tax settlement process which they oversee. “This is a simple way to cut waste and make government more efficient,” Sherman said. “It was suggested to me by the treasurer of Bayfield County who does the job and understands the efficiency to be gained. This legislation illustrates the value of listening to people and taking useful suggestions.”
The bill now goes to the Rules Committee where it can be scheduled for a vote on the Assembly floor.
“This is good, commonsense legislation,” Sherman commented. “We are hopeful that it can pass our house and still move through the Senate before the end of the session.”
