Senator Jauch welcomes Mercer student Jessica Barnes
to the 2008 Senate Scholar Program
State Senator Bob Jauch (D-Poplar) announced today that Mercer School student Jessica Barnes has been chosen to participate in the 2008 Senate Scholar Program. Elite high school juniors and seniors from around the state of Wisconsin will be participating in a week-long, intensive program at the State Capitol in February.
The Senate Scholar Program is an immersion program that allows students from around the state to personally understand the inner-workings of state government. In addition, it provides them the unique opportunity to interact with key decision makers and staff, as well as a better understanding of the issues that affect them as citizens of this state. They then put their knowledge into action by staffing an actual Senate session and participating in a Senate Scholar committee hearing on a bill that the students have drafted.
Ms. Barnes is the second student from Mercer School to attend the Senate Scholar Program, which is in its third year. Ashley Minnis, now a graduating senior, participated last year.
“This will be a wonderful opportunity for Ms. Barnes to expand her knowledge of state government, as she is a very qualified individual who involves herself deeply in community service, extracurricular activities and her studies. As a student at Mercer School, one of the smallest yet finest school districts in the state, she benefits from a terrific civic education curriculum that provides a strong connection between Madison and northern Wisconsin. Jessica’s participation in this program will strengthen this bond and provide her a unique perspective on the process,” Jauch said.
