After a poor winter, terrible spring, and ever-increasing oil prices, Iron County, through some hard working elected officials, was fortunate enough to get the attention of Wisconsin’s Governor Jim Doyle.
We were also very fortunate to have Governor Doyle, his Chief of Staff, his Press Secretary, Secretary of the Department of Financial Institutions, Lory Heinamen, Secretary of the Department of Tourism, Kelly Trumble, Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Aaron Olver, 74th District Assembly Representative Gary Sherman, WI State Senator Robert Jauch, and a few other state and local officials. On Wednesday, August 13th, Governor Doyle and the aforementioned shared breakfast with a contingent of local elected officials to discuss deficiencies within the state as well as how the state could assist Iron County.
I was asked to introduce the Governor and give a keynote address to the group. I was also asked to sit at the head table with the Governor and his Cabinet. I had a chance to visit with both the Governor as well as Tourism Secretary Trumble as to some of the concerns we have had here in Iron County in the past years. Please find attached a letter that I signed as Vice President of the Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce. I personally handed this to the Governor after speaking with him about it and he assured me that what could be done would be done. You will also find a picture of me chatting with the Governor following the breakfast. He actually asked me if my golf game was getting any better and if I had got rid of my terrible slice (Governor Doyle and I golfed together at WhiteCap a few years ago, eeeks I have a bad slice).
You can read more about this in the Ironwood Daily Globe online in Thursday’s paper. I was also interviewed by a staff writer from the Ironwood Daily Globe on a follow up story that they are going on the breakfast. This article should appear in tomorrow’s paper. I am certain that this will help Iron County. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at any time.
