Representative Gary Sherman (D-Port Wing) has been named co-chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Information Policy and Technology. The committee, charged with the important task of monitoring computer upgrades and initiatives on behalf of taxpayers, will hold regular public meetings to review reports from state agencies. Sherman will serve alongside co-chair State Senator Pat Kreitlow (D-Chippewa Falls).

     The saga of the budget’s voyage began last June, when the Governor asked every agency in all three branches of the government to prepare their budget requests. The Department of Administration compiles these budget requests and assists the Governor in putting his budget proposal together. This takes a long time.

     At 5:15 in the morning, after an all night session, Rep. Gary Sherman (D – Port Wing) joined 49 of his colleagues in passing a balanced budget in the midst of a historic economic crisis that saw state tax revenues fall by $5 billion since October. Forty-seven other states faced similar economic challenges.

     I am going to take a break from my series on the budget to review the general concepts of tort law to place the issue of joint and several liability in context.

     There is an old tale in the Talmud about the parts of the body arguing about which is the most powerful. I won’t repeat it here, except that it concludes that the tongue, which has the power to do either great good or great evil, is the most powerful.

     Representative Gary Sherman’s (D-Port Wing) announced today that the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) approved the Governor’s proposal for transit projects in 32 non-urbanized areas throughout the State of Wisconsin. The approval allocates part of Wisconsin’s portion of funding from the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

     State Representative Gary Sherman (D–Port Wing) and Senator Bob Jauch (D-Poplar) announced today that members of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance will hold a listening session on the state’s budget at the Ashland High School auditorium on Saturday, March 28th, 2009, starting at 9:00 a.m.

     In a previous article, I wrote that Wisconsin has cut taxes repeatedly, resulting in a substantial decrease in our revenue stream. Some doubted the accuracy of this statement, going so far as to impugn both my veracity and my sanity.

     On Tuesday the State Legislature designated the Brunsweiler River as a State Wild River in honor of conservationist Martin Hanson. The ten mile designated segment of the Brunsweiler River located in Ashland County within the Chequamagon-Nicolet National Forest becomes the fourth wild river to be given protected status. Representative Gary Sherman (D-Port Wing) and Senator Bob Jauch (D-Poplar) authored the legislation.
